Professor BOHDAN W. WASILEWSKI, MD PhD


Bohdan W. Wasilewski is a specialist in psychiatry, certified psychotherapist and Balint group leader, Head of the Institute of Psychosomatics and Sexology of the Centre of Medical Post Diploma Education, employee of the University of Warsaw, at present – Director of the Psychosomatic Institute in Warsaw. Author and co-author of 145 publications, including 47 monographs or textbooks. His papers are widely quoted in international scientific literature (Impact Factor CIF – 320). One of his works is very often cited and was identified as a Citation Classic by the Current Contents. Next to his research and training activities, he still is a practicing doctor, psychotherapist and an active Balint group leader. He serves as the president of a few international and national scientific working groups in the area of

psychotherapy and psychosomatics. Prof Wasilewski is a member of Management Boards of international and Polish scientific societies, member of editorial teams and reviewer of international scientific journals. He is also a member of many scientific associations, including International Balint Federation. He participated in many internships abroad, including working in the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Munich for two years. He carried out a long-term cooperation with the Harvard University and scientific cooperation with universities in London, Berlin, Leeds, Moscow, Chernivtsi, Rome and Paris. He is a member or the president of scientific or organizational committees of many international symposia.

Professor Wasilewski’s special interest is humanisation of medicine. He carries out this mission in the Polish Medical Association, the Section of Psychosomatic Medicine of which he set up in 1984. He has been either its president or deputy president for the whole period of its intensive activity. Analogically he has been active for twenty years as the founder and the president or deputy president of the Polish Balint Society, which promotes the art of the doctor-patient encounter. Since 1984, he has organized symposia, conferences or workshops about Balint groups, doctor and patient relationship or psychosomatic aspects of therapy. He is the chief editor of the magazine: “Sztuka Leczenia / Art of Healing” which was created at the Jagiellonian University 18 years ago and is focused on humanities, psychological and social aspects in medicine. In 2013 and 2014 Prof Wasilewski lectured at “Wszechnica – Open School” for the Polish Academy of Sciences which he used as an important tool of communicating his message to medical doctors.
